A grid of 96 cells fills up. Folders keep it tidy by putting objects inside other objects. This chapter explains folder views, how to nest objects, how to bring a file from your drive onto the grid, and which folders Gridtop protects.
A Folder on the grid is a real folder on your drive. Double-click it, and the grid shows what is inside: a grid of its own, with its own arrangement, which Gridtop remembers separately for each folder. You can also open a folder view from the File Directory, and an agent's own folder with Open Folder on its menu (4.7).
To return to the main grid, press ESC, or double-click the folder's own icon, which stays in view while you are inside.
To put an object inside a folder, drag it onto the folder's icon. What happens when you drop one object onto another depends on the one you drop it on:
Objects inside a Workflow have Move to... on their right-click menu, with Gridtop to bring the object out onto the main grid, or Other Workflow... to move it into another (17.3).
A few places refuse objects, such as the protected folders in 8.4, and a deleted file cannot be used until it is restored: Gridtop says In the Receptaculum. Restore it to use it. (9.3).
Send to Gridtop places a file or folder from your drive onto the main grid as a shortcut; the file stays where it is. You will find it on the right-click menus of the File Directory, Index, your website folders and the Web Fronts list. It is also the way to bring an object nested in a folder back out onto the main grid.
A handful of folders hold Gridtop's own workings, and cannot be moved, renamed or deleted, by you or by an agent:
You can open these folders and work with the files in them; protection means only that the folders themselves stay where Gridtop expects to find them.
